Since I started designing ebooks, all types of texts have come into my hands. After several jobs I wanted to write an article to talk about how to prepare a manuscript to transform it into an ebook , so as to provide a brief guide that facilitates the task of the layout designer, but which also gives clarity and organization to the manuscript. I have not created ebooks for publishing houses, but only for private individuals, for those who have written a book and wanted to sell it in self-publishing. In the first case I would have been amazed, obviously, by the conditions of those texts. In the second, however, I expected it. #1 – Lack of knowledge of ebook dynamics I think this is the biggest mistake. It is not an error of the ebook itself, or rather of the manuscript, but of the author.
Today we hear a lot about ebooks, many of you only read digital books, others alternate paper books with ebooks, we also have an ereader, but not everyone out there has yet understood what an ebook really is. If for a paper book we talk about reading, for an ebook we must talk about metal reading . Why? First of all, to read a traditional book you need two Special Data elements: the reader and the book. To read an ebook, however, you need three: the reader, the ebook and the ereader. An ereader offers a different reading experience . Reading an ebook is very similar to browsing a site: we can jump from one point to another with a click, we can change font sizes, we can make annotations, look up words in the dictionary, etc. It is a dynamic reading , not static like the one we were used to with paperback. Allowing yourself to be "enchanted" by the earning possibilities on Amazon is not a valid reason to create an ebook and sell it. Before creating an ebook, therefore, go to Amazon and download some for free, if you really don't mind spending 99 cents for the ones on sale.
If you don't have an ereader, download Kindle for desktop on Amazon (it's free) or Adobe Digital Edition to read ebooks in .epub format (also free) and look carefully at how they are made. #2 – Lack of a strong idea Remember when I talked about how to find a good idea for a story ? The famous premise that makes us understand if that story can be written, if it will have readers, if that idea works or not. Before thinking about creating an ebook, before even writing the book to sell, ask yourself two questions: Who will be interested in the book? What expectations will you have from the book? These are fundamental questions for me, because it is unthinkable to put an ebook on sale just for our pure pleasure, just because we are attached to an idea that for us - for us alone - is good, but which, if transformed into an ebook, will not interest anyone . Writing is art, but selling art is commerce. We cannot market products that have no market. An ebook is aimed at a specific market, not just the publishing market as a whole.
